Harry Mulisch (1927–2010) grew up as the son of an Austro-Hungarian father who was an officer in the First World War. His parents divorced before World War II and his mother moved to Amsterdam. When his mother moved to America, he stayed in the Netherlands and started writing. In 1946, Mulish wrote his first story, The Room, which was published a year later in Elsevier's Weekly. It was only after his first publication that Mulish started venturing into literature. He was also inspired by the theater. His first novel, Archibald Stroham, was published in 1951, for which he won the Reina Prinsen Geerligs prize. The book, in which the Archibald boy is unable to formulate a comprehensive philosophy, is the beginning of a series of novels, novels and plays that draw their strength from the master's balance of mythological, magical and psychological themes. The change came after Stone Bridal Bed (1959); Reality came out. Feed for Psychologists was published in 1961 and later D-Case 40/61, about the trial of Eichmann in Jerusalem. The Narrator Told (1971) introduced a new period: the book is a parody of genre and style, aphorisms and ideas. The novel Kaksi naista (1975) and the novel Old Air (1977) are examples of crystal clear stories, but behind which lies a complex mythological event full of Mullish motives. In 1977, on his 50th birthday, he was made a knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau, and in 1992 an officer. Mulisch turned 65, The Discovery of Heaven (1992) was published, which critics called a masterpiece and received universal praise. This novel brings together all the themes that Mulish has covered in his books over the years. The book was a phenomenal success abroad, especially in the German-speaking world. The acclaimed novel was published in 1998 and fits seamlessly into a versatile and constantly innovative work. This book was awarded the Libris Sahitya Award in 1999. In 2000, Mulisch's latest novel, Siegfried, a Black Idyll, was published and was nominated for the Eko Literary Award and the NS Publications Award. Harry Mulisch received an honorary doctorate from the University of Amsterdam on January 8, 2007, on the 375th anniversary of the University of Amsterdam. Discovery of Heaven was chosen as the best Dutch novel of 2007. Other literary awards include the Constantijn Huygens Award (1977), the P.C. Hooft Prize (1986), Dutch Literature Prize (1995). He was also admired abroad, including the appointment of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts en des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture (2001), Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of the Federal Republic of Germany. Seas. (2003) and the Italian Premio Fliano International Literary Award (2003) and Premio Nonino (2007). Harry Mulish's works have been translated into English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Russian, Hebrew, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian, Serbo-Croatian, Slovenian, Bahasa Indonesia, On Chinese d' Anslag takes the crown with translations in twenty languages. Harry Mulish died on October 30, 2010.
